SAT Subject Tests

The subject matter of the SAT and SAT Subject Tests couldn’t be more different.

The SAT covers basic math, vocabulary and some general reading ability, while the SAT Subject Tests are designed to measure specific knowledge in a particular academic area like biology or world history. Typically, only very selective schools ask for SAT Subject Tests. Most of these colleges will ask you to take two or three tests. Find out which (if any) are required by your prospective schools far enough in advance that you have time to take them.

The Basics

Each test is an hour long, and you can take anywhere from one to three in one day. Tests are available in the following subjects: Literature, Chinese with Listening, Math Level 1, French and French with Listening, Math Level 2, German and German with Listening, United States History, Modern Hebrew, World History, Italian, Biology, Japanese with Listening, Chemistry, Korean with Listening, Physics, Latin, Spanish and Spanish with Listening and English Language Proficiency.

Scoring

SAT Subject Tests

All SAT Subject Tests are scored on a scale of 200 to 800; the exception to this rule is the English Language Proficiency Test, which is scored on a scale of 901 to 999. Test that do not involve written responses are graded by a computer. The computer simply adds up the number of questions you answered correctly and then subtracts one-quarter of the number of questions you answered incorrectly (it doesn’t count questions you skip). This determines your raw test score, which is then converted to a scaled score.

Timing

SAT Subject Tests are administered in October, November, December, January, May and June. Not all of the tests are offered at each location, so it’s imperative you check the dates and details on the College Board website carefully. It’s important to take the test when the subject is fresh in your mind. So if your chemistry course ends in May, you should sit for either the May or the June exam. If you do well in your 9th grade biology class, you should take that Subject Test at the end of freshman year.

The Silver Lining

The great thing about the SAT Subject Tests is that you can take any one in which you think you might excel. So if you’re a history buff or you speak Latin like Caesar, then this is your chance to shine. It is also a great opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge in the field you plan to pursue in college. For example, if you are applying to the premed program, it may be a good idea to take the biology test. At some colleges, a high score enables you to place out of certain required courses.

One important note: ETS allows you to change your mind about which test you’d like to take on test day. If you aren’t sure which test you’ll feel more confident taking, you can study up until d-day and then decide at the last moment.

Ready to start studying for the SAT Subject Tests? The Princeton Review offers guidebooks and classroom courses.

SAT Score Choice

Here’s what you need to know about the “score choice” feature on the SAT.

What is score choice?

Score choice allows the test-taker (you) to decide which SAT scores to release to prospective colleges. In the past, colleges would automatically receive all of your scores.

Score choice is a free option that you choose when you register for the test. If you do not choose it, your prospective colleges will continue to receive all of your scores.

Does that mean colleges will see only my best scores on each section?

SAT Score Choice

No. Score choice allows you to release your entire SAT Reasoning Test (formerly known as the SAT I) results from one or more test dates. If you take the test in October, for example, you can release all of your section scores (Math, Critical Reading, and Writing) from that date or none of your section scores from that date. You’re not allowed to pick and choose by section.

The rules for the SAT Subject Tests (formerly known as the SAT IIs) are a little different. You can release any SAT Subject Test score from any date. For example, if you took both US History and Math Level 2 in June, you could release the History while holding back the Math.

Will colleges care if I use score choice?

It depends. Some don’t mind if you use score choice. But most still want to see all of your scores.

The College Board (the company that runs the SAT) says that it does not notify schools if a student is using score choice. That said, if a school expects to receive all of your scores, you should send in all of your scores. It is not a good idea to be dishonest or sneaky at any point in the college admissions process.

So…should I use score choice?

We recommend that you release all of your scores from the SAT Reasoning Test.

Here’s why: most colleges want to see all of your scores. And most colleges already consider only your highest scores (by section or by test date) when making admissions decisions.

Let’s say you take the SAT Reasoning Test in June and earn a 610 Math, 520 Critical Reading and 580 Writing, for a cumulative score of 1710. Then you take it again in October and earn a 590 Math, 640 Critical Reading and 620 Writing, for a much better cumulative score of 1850.

You might be tempted to use score choice and withhold your June scores. But that would be a mistake. Sending scores from both test dates will help you with schools that consider your highest score from each section (since you earned a higher Math score in June), and it won’t hurt you with schools that consider only your highest set of scores. So the mix–and–match schools would give you credit for a cumulative score of 1870, and the highest test date schools would put you down for an 1850.

If you bomb one of the SAT Subject Tests, it may make sense to withhold the score. Just make sure that this does not violate the policy of any of your prospective schools.

If you’re planning to use score choice to sit for the SAT six or seven times, you might want to think again. Your score is unlikely to rise significantly after the third time. Your time, effort and resources would be better invested in good preparation.

The SAT vs. the ACT

Colleges will accept either the SAT or ACT. So which should you take?

It’s all about the numbers. Some students end up scoring substantially higher on the SAT; others do better on the ACT. The Princeton Review offers a free assessment to help you determine which test is best for you. Find an upcoming assessment in your area here.

To help you zero in on the right exam, here are seven key differences:

ACT questions tend to be more straightforward.

ACT questions are often easier to understand on a first read. On the SAT, you may need to spend time figuring out what you’re being asked before you can start solving the problem. For example, here are sample questions from the SAT essay and the ACT Writing Test (their name for the essay):

SAT: What is your view of the claim that something unsuccessful can still have some value?
ACT: In your view, should high schools become more tolerant of cheating?

The SAT has a stronger emphasis on vocabulary.

The SAT vs. the ACT

If you’re an ardent wordsmith, you’ll love the SAT. If words aren’t your thing, you may do better on the ACT.

The ACT has a Science section, while the SAT does not.

You don’t need to know anything about amoebas or chemical reactions for the ACT Science section. It is meant to test your reading and reasoning skills, based upon a given set of facts. But if you’re a true science-phobe, the SAT might be a better fit.

The ACT tests more advanced math concepts.

The ACT requires you to know a little trigonometry, in addition to the algebra and geometry you’ll find on the SAT. That said, the ACT Math section is not necessarily harder, since many students find the questions to be more straightforward than those on the SAT.

The ACT Writing Test is not required.

The 25-minute SAT essay is required, and is factored into your Writing score. The 30-minute ACT Writing Test is optional. If you choose to take it, it is not included in your composite score—schools will see it listed separately.

The SAT is broken up into more sections.

On the ACT, you tackle each content area (English, Math, Reading, and Science Reasoning) in one big chunk, with the optional Writing Test at the end. On the SAT, the content areas (Critical Reading, Math, and Writing) are broken up into ten sections, with the required essay at the beginning. You do a little math, a little writing, a little critical reading, a little more math, etc. Will it distract or refresh you to move back and forth between different content areas?

The ACT is more of a “big picture” exam.

College admissions officers care about how you did on each section of the SAT. On the ACT, they’re most concerned with your composite score. So if you’re weak in one content area but strong in others, you could still end up with a very good ACT score.

Our ACT or SAT? book has additional information about both tests (including plenty of practice questions), as well as a complete assessment exam to help you make the right choice. Find a copy in our online bookstore.

What is the SAT and why is it important?

Etched in stone by the ancient druids, the SAT is believed…
Actually, the SAT comes from the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is contracted by The College Board to create the test.

The SAT is just one factor in the admissions decision. Schools also consider your high school GPA, academic transcript, letters of recommendation, interviews and personal essays. The weight placed on SAT scores varies from school to school. Most colleges and universities will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT.

For more specific information on the importance of SAT scores at the schools you’re interested in, contact the admissions offices directly.

What specifically does the SAT test?

About the SAT

There are 3 SAT sections–Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. The Writing section includes an essay, which–unlike the ACT –is not optional. Start to finish, the test will take you 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

SAT versus ACT. Is one harder? Is one better? More prestigious? More useful? If only it were that simple. More about the SAT vs. the ACT.

How is the SAT scored?

Each section is scored on a 200 to 800 point scale, making the “perfect” score 2400.

How do I know if my score is good enough to get me into my dream school?

Good question. Check out the Can I Get In function in our School Search.

How do I register?

SAT registration deadlines fall approximately 5 weeks before each test date. To register by mail, fill out the registration form in the College Board’s Bulletin for the SAT Program. You can get a free copy of this publication from your school’s guidance counselor. Or you can call ETS at 609–771–7600 and they’ll send you one free of charge. You can also register online at the College Board website.

How can I prepare?

We can help. We have prep solutions for every student and every budget.

However, it is important to note that Chapter 7 bankruptcy will not allow you to discharge back taxes and child support payments. Under Chapter 7 bankruptcy laws, many of your assets could be sold. Each state has an individual list of assets that are exempt, and examples of those are vehicles, family heirlooms, homesteads and everyday items, such as food, clothing and cooking items. In addition, you may also be able to keep your car or your home if you have a loan against them. You will need to sign a reaffirmation, which simply says that you are going to continue making those payments on those specific loans. If you do this in the timeframe allowed by the law in your state, often, you will be able to keep those assets, depending on your individual states exemptions and equity in each asset. The primary benefits of filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, is the ability for you to rid yourself of most if not all of your dischargeable debt. Most often, Chapter 7 bankruptcy is very beneficial if you have an extraordinary amount of consumer debt that you simply cannot surmount. In this way, Chapter 7 bankruptcy could give you the opportunity to start anew. If for any reason you are wondering if you qualify for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you can always choose to speak to a knowledgeable and qualified bankruptcy lawyer who can provide you with more information concerning bankruptcy laws and additional bankruptcy information.

Chapter 13 & Bankruptcy: How it impacts a homeowner and a real estate investor

Consequently if you have a second mortgage on your home or investment property and the mortgage is unsecured because of the market value dropping oftentimes it is possible to change the mortgage from a secured debt to an unsecured debt if the second or the third mortgage because an unsecured debt than it can be discharged with your other unsecured debts at the end of the plan period. This allows the homeowner investor to keep their home and pay less.

New Bankruptcy Laws and variations

Those that are not in a position to spend their creditors any extra can opt for liquidation of assets that comes below bankruptcy laws. It is very comparable to create a brand new repayment plan, allowing orderly distribution from the assets to tiny organization creditors. The approach is recognized as liquidation or reorganization. Nonetheless, the approach is protected by numerous federal or state laws, that happen to be quite challenging to be understood by widespread individual or tiny organization organization. You may effortlessly speak to to your neighborhood lawyers for the particulars with regards to bankruptcy laws. These laws are segregated into various chapters that evaluate and state guidelines for the approach of bankruptcy and repayment plan. Most likely by far the most significant chapter, designed for individual and firms is Chapter 7 that grants permission for total liquidation or discharge of assets to spend the debts. There are essentially other people too just like Chapter 11, Chapter 12, and Chapter 13 that states the various processes necessary to be followed all through the liquidation of assets.

Bankruptcy, Foreclosures, and Garnishments

Bankruptcy, Foreclosure, Short Sales & Rebuilding your Credit

Laws relating to bankruptcy vary by state. Lawyers in New Orleans can walk you through the labyrinth of laws here locally with regard to foreclosure, garnishments, and if bankruptcy is right for you. Foreclosures are becoming more common as the economy takes a nosedive. Where it used to be a rare occurrence, it is now unfortunately common. Foreclosures made up a quarter of all home sales in the third quarter of 2010 and rose to an astounding third of sales by spring of 2011. In September of 2010, foreclosure sales in Nevada were 56 percent of all sales in the state, Arizona saw 47 percent and 43 percent in California. Ohio and Kentucky were also in the 40 percentages. It is a tough time to be a homeowner, but possible a great time to be a first time homebuyer. In Louisiana, the local sheriff conducts foreclosures. Local attorneys can help you navigate these treacherous waters by filing either a chapter 7 or a chapter 13 bankruptcies. These filing will halt a foreclosure in Louisiana, but you must file before the auction actually takes place. Foreclosures wreck havoc with credit scores, standard of living, and disruption to family life. You can be advised on what will work best in your circumstances and in your particular situation. Each case is different and each needs to be handled as such. If your checks are garnished, you know the hopeless feeling that can bring. With a chapter 7 or 13 attorneys in Louisiana can stop just about any kind of garnishment except of course, domestic support obligations. If the credit card companies are taking half your income, it may be time to consult with a Louisiana attorney about your rights and responsibilities. While no one wants to file bankruptcy, it is in place to protect you and your family through these tough economic times. There are risks and consequences with bankruptcy but often the lessons learned are invaluable for future financial security. Budgeting is the first step in reconciliation. You must learn to live on a budget. One-third of families in the United States report that they do not use a budget to manage their finances. This is crucial to financial health. It is the only way to see where your money is going. Laws vary by state, only a Louisiana Attorney can help you navigate the waters locally of garnishment, consolidation, bankruptcy, and foreclosures for financial freedom and peace of mind.

Filing Bankruptcy to Avoid Foreclosure

A Chapter 13 bankruptcy may the better option if you’re looking to protect your home from foreclosure. A Chapter 13 is different than a Chapter 7 where debt is just discharged. In a Chapter 13 your debt is reorganized and prioritized and you are put on a payment plan. If you’re already in the foreclosure process this might be your best option, but if you’re too far in there may be nothing that can be done to save your home.
