What are laws about owning pet pigs in the United States and how much room would one need?

By admin On November 21, 2009 Under States laws

Hello,

I am thinking of getting a pet pig in a few months and was wondering, what are United States laws about owning pigs that would NOT be raised for meat in cities? Would I not be allowed to?

Also, how much land would a smaller pig need to be pleased? I’m sorry I don’t know a type as an example as I am still new to pigs.

Thank you!

well. . .
with the swine flu going around, you shouldn’t get one now,
but a lot of space.

There are no federal laws against owning pigs.
There will only be local (county or city) laws, having to do with zoning and livestock in residential areas. Check with your county zoning commission.

ps – A small pig grows into a large pig quite quickly. They will grow to anywhere from 300 to 800 pounds or so. They will be pleased with a standard yard, so that will be fine.
Just be aware that it will become huge, and possibly mean, in a year or two.

I’ve raised pigs for nearly 12 years. I usually give my pigs 15-20 square feet of room, but I walk them regularly. (we have 15 acres of open land) The regulations really all depend on where you live.

Random information, pigs like basketballs. :)

I would call your local ASPCA or local humane society and question them considering they deal with animals all the time. If you really want to know the laws and dimensions of space and what not, calling the animal department in a police precinct or “animal cops” would help because-well they´re the law to the animals really. They should be able to help you.

Pot bellied pigs are brilliant pets and quite often live in the house just like a dog does. But, since they are considered as livestock you’d have to check with your local zoning office.

you do need alot of room for pigs but i doubt there is any laws agains them but if you live in an apartment make sure you tell your landlord

My sister used to have a pig and she had a pretty small house and the pig was fine. But it finished up giving my niece ring worm, in which case she lost about a 3 sq inch patch of hair in her head.
I would say that as long as you don’t live in an apartment you should be ok. . . especially if you have a back yard in which the pig may roam around in.

And HAHAHAHA. It still amuses me that people reckon the swine flu really comes from pigs.
